There's nothing like the whiff of honey cake or that first bite of
Friday-night brisket to whisk you back to childhood. Senses stimulated, you
slip through time and space back to where you came from.
I come from New Jersey. But instead of chicken soup with kneidelach, it's
carobs that take me home.
The carob pod (bokser in Yiddish), flat and lightweight, is a good
traveler. I know. The winter I was 8 years old, I saw it travel all the way
to America. It arrived on Tu b'Shevat, the New Year of the Trees.
