TORAH PORTION; Is It a God of Compassion Who Sends Tsunamis?

This week's Torah portion brings the 10 plagues to their zenith, ultimately
convincing Pharaoh to give the Jews their freedom following the plague of
the slaying of the first-born. Included in the list of 10 are natural
disasters, such as the plagues of locusts, hail and total darkness.
Emerging from these is the notion -- considered logical to most
religionists -- that such disasters are a special sign of divine
displeasure with human conduct, a punishment for our sins on Earth.

This idea becomes even more perplexing just weeks after the tragedy of the
