Fed: Downer defends decision on China arms embargo

CANBERRA, Feb 12 AAP - Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today it would be hypocritical
of the Australian government to back the United States in lobbying the European Union
to maintain an arms embargo on China.

The US wanted Japan and Australia to join it in opposing any such move by the EU but
the Howard government has refused, creating a rare strategic disagreement between Washington
and Canberra in recent years.
