Fought 100 years ago in Korea and Manchuria, the Russo-Japanese War, almost
forgotten today, made profound changes in Russian history. It also brought
about the emergence of Joseph Trumpeldor and Jacob Schiff, who each in his
own way had a lasting effect on 20th-century history.

The Russo-Japanese War began in February 1904 with a surprise attack by the
Japanese fleet on the Russian naval base at Port Arthur in Manchuria. Two
Russian battleships and a cruiser were torpedoed. (America should have been
