Human rights group Amnesty International on Tuesday condemned Sudanese police for using deadly force to quell a weekend demonstration and demanded an independent inquiry investigate the incident.

Reports vary on the number of people killed during Saturday's protest by members of the northeastern Beja tribe, with the local governor saying 14 people died and tribal leaders putting the death toll at least 25, with 196 people wounded.
