PRESIDENT Bush has attempted to move the Irish peace process up a gear by
telephoning the leaders of the North's two largest political parties, the
Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Sinn Fein.

While clearly not yet adopting the same hands-on approach as his
predecessor Bill Clinton, Bush's intervention at a crucial stage of the
political process was welcomed by all sides.

First to receive the call from the presidential ranch in Crawford, Texas
last week was DUP leader Ian Paisley who had an opportunity to chat with
Bush on Friday. Paisley told journalists ...
