Friday, January 7, 2005 -- Like most of us, I guess, Latvia has figured little in my life, other than as the source of the many Letts who regularly populate New York Times crossword puzzles.

Lithuania was, of course, a different story. The high Jewish intellectual life centered in Vilnius (in Yiddish, forever, "Vilna") and its tributaries was so rich in so many directions, traditional and modern alike, that to this day thousands of Jews, Talmudists ...
