Despite the economic downturn of the past four years and the struggling
economy in the Indianapolis area, the African-American population of
Indianapolis - the city and the region - continues to grow. And
African-American population has literally exploded in the metro's suburbs,
according to new 2003 population estimates released by the Census Bureau.

The population growth of the city of Indianapolis-Marion County is solely
due to the growth of African Americans and Hispanics. Between 2000 and
