University Press), just published last month, and "Adapting to Abundance"
(Columbia University Press, 1990). He is at work on his first novel, "The

Why should a somewhat stiff novella about Jewish immigrants in 1896 hold an
American audience today? It shouldn't, and if Congress had not reopened the
