HE was barely 20 when Alexander of Macedonia, before he went on to become Alexander the Great, defeated Persia which had the largest army in the world then.

Some 12 years later, by 325BC, Alexander had created an empire stretching from tiny Macedonia to all Greece and beyond, including the mighty Persian empire, Egypt and right up to northern India.
The empire was huge and the spoils of war were plentiful but the Macedonians, who formed the core of Alexander's army, were weary.
