Fed: Howard hints at "years" still as prime minister

CANBERRA, Dec 21 AAP - John Winston Howard indicated he may be prime minister for years
to come as he assumed the mantle of Australia's second-longest serving prime minister
today.

However, some of his closest colleagues were diffident on whether Mr Howard could beat
the 18-year record set by Sir Robert Menzies.

Mr Howard hinted he would remain in the job for at least another few years, promising
to serve the Australian people with energy and dedication.
