The death of Naomi Shemer at age 74 on a Shabbat morning in the month of
Tammuz, has been deeply felt by Jews throughout the world. My generation
grew up singing her songs in religious schools, day schools and Jewish
camps throughout North America.
When she wrote "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav" in 1967, just prior to the
outbreak of the Six-Day War, I had already taught several Shemer songs to
campers at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, including "Machar/`Tomorrow'" --
