Lawmaker, activist urge Russian authorities to counter lawlessness and unrest in Kalmykia region

A lawmaker and a rights activist criticized Russian leaders Wednesday for turning a blind eye to the impoverished province of Kalmykia, where recent opposition protests resulted in police beatings and a death, and warned that the unrest could spark more violence.

One person died, more than 90 others were injured and about 140 were detained in late September when some 2,000 activists marched through the Kalmyk capital, Elista, demanding that President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov step down, rights activist and lawyer ...
