TORZHOK, Tver Region -- The wall map in the Pushkin Museum in Torzhok
might seem an unlikely metaphor for the Tver region's post-Soviet economic
development.
But the old map charting the poet's travels in northwestern Russia
tells a modern tale: Just like Pushkin in the 1820s, businessmen today
seem to think the best reason to go to Tver is to pass through it on the
way to Moscow or St. Petersburg.
