In a sun-drenched rehearsal studio nine floors above the weekday clamor of 42nd Street, Jane Comfort and Company are traveling to the underworld.

A triumphant Olase Freeman cradles Cynthia Bueschel Svigals' limp form as Aleta Hayes pounds the floor, wailing. She and her fellow dancers mime ripping up the floor to symbolize the pair's descent into hell.

It is Comfort's interpretation of the Greek myth "Persephone," and the dance-theater troupe was to perform it at the Joyce Theater Tuesday evening.
