a diving waterbird (family Podicipedidae) with a long neck, lobed toes, and almost no tail, typically having bright breeding plumage used in display. The several North American species include the
western grebe (Aechmorphorus occidentalis) and the
pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps).
