visitation, episcopal. Episcopal visitations are designed for the periodic inspection of those temporal and spiritual affairs of a diocese under the bishop's control. In the later Middle Ages, when the work was already conducted by commissaries of the bishop, elaborate legal forms for the presentation of offenders were developed. In the C of E the Abps., of Canterbury and York have the right to visit the dioceses of their respective provinces.
