submersion (also ‘total immersion’). The form of
Baptism in which the water completely covers the candidate's body. Though
immersion is now also common, submersion is practised in the Orthodox and several other E. Churches, and it is one of the methods provided in the 1969 RC rite for the Baptism of Infants. It is widely supposed to have been the custom in the early Church.
