spirituals. American religious folk songs. They originated (as ‘spiritual songs’) in the White revivalist Churches of the 18th cent. and their
camp meetings in the 19th cent. The Black form (‘Negro spirituals’), though apparently derived from the White style, acquired its own character, with texts identifying the sufferings of Christ with the Blacks' own condition of slavery, and an emphasis on the desire for release from the troubles of the world. Other forms of
Gospel music developed out of both styles in the late 19th cent.
