seven liberal arts. The group of sciences which formed the staple of secular education in the earlier Middle Ages, consisting of the elementary
trivium (grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic) and the more advanced
quadrivium (music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy). Not until the student had completed his studies in the liberal arts was he held competent to proceed to theology.
