seminary. In ecclesiastical usage, a school or college devoted to the training of the clergy, especially used of such institutions in the RC Church. The Council of Trent ordered the establishment of a seminary in every diocese. The 1983 Codex Iuris Canonici provides for minor and major seminaries: the former to assist a young man in his spiritual formation while he engages in the same course as other young men; the latter to form men spiritually, academically, and pastorally for the priesthood.
