pallium

pallium. The circular band of white material with two hanging strips and marked with six black crosses which is worn on the shoulders by the Pope and granted by him to metropolitans (formerly also to some other bishops and archbishops) of the RC Church. It is held to signify the power which, in communion with the Roman Church, the metropolitan possesses by law in his province. It went out of use in the C of E at the Reformation, but still appears in some armorial bearings.
