lay brother, lay sister. A member of a religious order who is not bound to the recitation of the Divine
Office and is occupied in manual work. The institution originated in the 11th cent. The Second
Vatican Council in 1965 required that lay brothers should be drawn into the heart of the community's life and that, if possible, there should be only one category of nuns.
