hands, imposition of. A ritual gesture which figures prominently in the Bible and in the life of the Church. In the Bible its predominant use is as a manner of blessing (e.g. Gen. 48), though in some cases an element of commission may be implied. It was used by Christ in many of His healing miracles. Some of the references in Acts have traditionally been taken as examples of Confirmation and Ordination. While the significance of these texts is open to question, the placing of the bishop's hand on the head of each candidate has come to be the central act of both these sacraments. The priest lays his hands on the sick person in the RC rite of Unction and in some modern Anglican rites for the Visitation of the Sick.
