election. In the vocabulary of theology, an act of the Divine Will exercising itself on creatures, among whom it chooses some in preference to others. In the OT the Divine election bears especially on Israel, the ‘Chosen People’; in the NT the place of the Old Israel is taken by the Church. In the teaching of the Fathers and Schoolmen the term plays an important part in connection with
predestination (q.v.). It came to be a matter of dispute, especially among
Calvinists, whether God's election was wholly without relation to faith and works. K.
Barth focused on the assertion that it is primarily in Jesus Christ that election (and reprobation) is realized.
