Copyright
chrism. A mixture of olive oil and balsam used in the ritual of the Greek and Latin Churches. It may be consecrated only by a bishop; in the E. now only by Patriarchs and other heads of
autocephalous Churches. According to present Latin usage, chrism is consecrated on
Maundy Thursday, since 1955 at a special Mass of the Chrism. In the E. chrismation is part of the rite of
Baptism, and is also used for the reconciliation of
apostates and the reception of converts from other Christian Churches. In the W. it is used in Baptism,
Confirmation, and
Holy Orders. In both E. and W. it is used in the consecration of churches and altars.
