chalice veil. A square of material, normally of the same colour as the Eucharistic vestments, for some centuries used in the W. to cover the
chalice and
paten during the parts of the Mass when they were not in use, i.e. until the
offertory and after the
ablutions. The 1970 Roman Missal makes no mention of the chalice veil.
