anthropology. In its more exact sense the word designates the study of man as contrasted, e.g. with that of God or of angels. It enables the Christian apologist to exhibit the true nature of man against views which represent him as an economic unit or a mass of psychological reflexes. In popular usage ‘anthropology’ is used of the science which studies the life and environment of primitive man, and more recently, of the study of man in society (social anthropology).
