Zephaniah, Book of. Minor Prophet. The Book announces the approaching judgement of all peoples in the Day of the Lord, but holds out the hope of future conversion among foreign nations and of a faithful remnant among the Jews. The prophecy claims to have been delivered in the reign of Josiah (d.
c.608 BC); it probably belongs before 621 BC. The opening words of the
‘Dies irae’ are taken from the
Vulgate version of 1:15 f.
