Whitgift, John (probably 1532–1604), Abp. of
Canterbury from 1583. He had held high office at Cambridge, where his opposition to T.
Cartwright brought him to the notice of
Elizabeth I. In 1583 he issued the ‘Eleven Articles’, one of which required subscription to articles of loyalty to the existing settlement. He used the Ecclesiastical Commission to repress
Puritanism (e.g. the
Marprelate Tracts), and he resisted the attempts of the extreme Puritans in 1584–9 to impose upon the Church a
Presbyterian form of government. A determined advocate of episcopacy and ritual uniformity, theologically he was a
Calvinist (
Lambeth Articles).
