Tikhon, St (1866–1925), Basil Ivanovitch Belavin, the first Patriarch of the Russian Church since 1700. In 1917 he became Metropolitan of Moscow, and later in the year the Panrussian Council elected him Patriarch. His courage and humility gave him moral authority. In 1919 he anathematized all who persecuted the Church but he imposed neutrality on the clergy in the civil war between the Reds and the Whites. He resisted the State confiscation of Church property in the famine of 1921–2 and was placed under arrest. In 1923 he signed a declaration professing loyalty to the Soviet Government; he was then allowed to live in a monastery in Moscow and to officiate in the capital. Feast day, 9 Oct.
