Suburbicarian Dioceses

Suburbicarian Dioceses. The seven dioceses in the immediate vicinity of Rome. The ‘Cardinal Bishops’ take their episcopal titles from these sees, but since 1962 they have not had pastoral charge of them. Their bishops probably had the right to take part in Papal elections as early as the 11th cent.
