Spiritual Exercises, The

Spiritual Exercises, The. The famous treatise of St Ignatius Loyola, originating from his experiences at Manresa in 1522–3 and substantially completed by 1541. It is a manual for those giving retreats, and provides a structured programme of mainly imaginative prayer lasting, in its full form, for about a month. Themes from it are often taken for shorter retreats.
