Solomon, Song of (also called Song of Songs or Canticles), OT Book. It seems to be an anthology of love poems, ascribed to Solomon and his beloved (the ‘Shulamite’) and their friends. It probably dates from as late as the 3rd cent. BC, though individual poems may be much earlier.

In the Talmud the Book is regarded as an allegory of God's dealings with Israel. Christians have seen in it a description of God's relations with the Church or with the individual soul.
