Sixtus II, St (d. 258), or ‘Xystus’, Pope from 257. He resumed relations with St Cyprian and the Churches of Africa and Asia Minor broken off by his predecessor (Stephen I) over the validity of Baptism by heretics. He suffered martyrdom and was highly venerated. Feast day, 7 (formerly 6) Aug.
