Sixtus II, St (d. 258), or ‘Xystus’, Pope from 257. He resumed relations with St
Cyprian and the Churches of Africa and Asia Minor broken off by his predecessor (
Stephen I) over the
validity of Baptism by heretics. He suffered martyrdom and was highly venerated. Feast day, 7 (formerly 6) Aug.
