Schola Cantorum (Lat., ‘a school of singers’). In the worship of the early Church all music was rendered by the clergy and congregation, but gradually the practice of having a body of trained singers was introduced. At
Rome the Schola was established on a sound footing by Gregory the Great (d. 604). The custom spread over W. Christendom.
