Schola Cantorum

Schola Cantorum (Lat., ‘a school of singers’). In the worship of the early Church all music was rendered by the clergy and congregation, but gradually the practice of having a body of trained singers was introduced. At Rome the Schola was established on a sound footing by Gregory the Great (d. 604). The custom spread over W. Christendom.
