Robert, St (
c.1027–1111), Abbot of Molesme. He became a monk when he was 15. In 1075 he founded a monastery at Molesme in Burgundy for some hermits who had asked to be placed under his direction. When divisions appeared in the community, Robert and some of the monks left Molesme and founded the monastery of
Cîteaux. Later the monks of Molesme asked to have their abbot back; Robert returned and Molesme became a famous
Benedictine centre. Feast day, 29 Apr.
