Portiuncula

Portiuncula. A small chapel in the plain below Assisi. In it St Francis received his vocation, and during his lifetime it was the headquarters of his Order. The chapel and the cell in which he died are now enclosed by an imposing 16th-cent. church, largely rebuilt after an earthquake in 1832. The chapel gives its name to the ‘Portiuncula Indulgence’, said to have been granted by Honorius III in 1216.
