Philaret, Theodore Nikitich Romanov (
c.1553–1633), Patr. of Moscow. His son was elected Tsar in 1613, but Philaret, who had been imprisoned by the Poles, was not freed until 1619. In that year he was made patriarch and virtually ruled Russia until his death. He was a zealous reformer and encouraged the study of theology.
