Pentateuch. A title in use among biblical scholars for the five ‘Books of
Moses’:
Genesis,
Exodus,
Leviticus,
Numbers, and
Deuteronomy. Traditionally these Books have been held to be written by Moses himself. In the 19th cent. the ‘documentary hypothesis’ was developed by J.
Wellhausen and others; according to this the Pentateuch was compiled from written documents dating from the 9th to the 5th cent. BC. Some scholars now reject the notion that previously independent documents were combined to form the Pentateuch and argue that cycles of oral tradition gradually evolved until something like the present form of the Pentateuch emerged.
