Penitential Books. Books containing directions for confessors which included lists of sins with a set of graded penances for each. They first appeared in the Celtic Churches in the 6th cent. and spread throughout the W. Church. Efforts to provide more orderly handbooks culminated in Book 19 of the Decretum of Burchard of Worms (d. 1025).
