Patteson, John Coleridge

Patteson, John Coleridge (1827–1871), missionary. In 1855 he set out for the South Pacific to assist in the work of the Melanesian Mission. He toured the islands in the Southern Cross and in 1861 he was consecrated first Bp. of Melanesia. He was murdered in 1871. His fate made a deep impression in England. Feast day in some parts of the Anglican Communion, 20 Sept.
