Paschasius Radbertus, St

Paschasius Radbertus, St (c.790–c.860), theologian. He was a monk, and from 843/4 to 849 abbot, of Corbie. His works include commentaries on Lam. and Mt., but he is best known for his treatise De Corpore et Sanguine Domini, the first doctrinal monograph on the Eucharist. In maintaining the Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, Radbertus specified it further as the flesh born of Mary, which had suffered on the Cross and risen again, and which is miraculously multiplied by the omnipotence of God at each consecration. His teaching was attacked by Ratramnus and Rabanus Maurus. It is now generally accepted that he was also the author of Cogitis me, attributed to St Jerome, which is important in the history of the doctrine of Assumption of the BVM in the W. Feast day, 26 Apr.
