Offa (d. 796), King of the Mercians from 757. He gradually secured dominion, either directly or as overlord, over other parts of England south of the R. Humber. His dealings with Hadrian I led to a visit by two Papal legates to England in 786 and the creation of a new archbishopric at Lichfield in 787 (suppressed in 803); in 787 his son was anointed king—the first recorded consecration of an English king.
