Norway, Christianity in. From the mid-10th cent. Christianity seems to have been gradually introduced, sometimes at the point of the sword; after the death of St
Olav (1030) there is no record of ‘heathen’ opposition. Nicholas Breakspear (the future Pope
Hadrian IV) made Nidaros (Trondheim) an archbishopric with jurisdiction over the other Norwegian dioceses and elsewhere. The Reformation was imposed in 1537 by the Danes who annexed Norway.
Lutheranism became the State religion, no other being recognized until 1845, when Norway had been (since 1814) united with
Sweden. From the mid-19th cent. a Low Church
Pietism was influential. Religious dissent spread (
Methodists,
Baptists,
Pentecostals, and after the Second World War,
Jehovah's Witnesses and
Mormons). The RC Church was introduced in 1843; since 1945 its position has been enhanced by intellectual converts and immigrant refugees.
