New Year's Day. Christians avoided the ‘Saturnalia’ which marked the beginning of the Roman New Year (1 Jan.). Later they reckoned the beginning of the year on different days in different countries; in England the year began with the Feast of the
Annunciation (25 Mar.). With the introduction of the
Gregorian Calendar, 1 Jan. was accepted. In the E.
Orthodox Church New Year's Day (here 1 Sept.) is solemnized in many hymns, but in the W. it has traditionally had no liturgical significance apart from the fact that it coincided with the Feast of the
Circumcision (in the RC Church now observed as the Solemnity of the Motherhood of the BVM). In England an informal ‘watch-night’ service is common, especially among
Methodists.
