Morrison, Robert (1782–1834), first Protestant missionary in China. Working under the LMS, he was sent to Canton in 1807. With great difficulty he secured lessons in Chinese, which could not then be taught to foreigners. He published a Chinese grammar, a dictionary, and a translation of the Bible.
