Mattins. It was originally the morning service in the primitive round of daily prayer. Later it was preceded by an early morning
Vigil. In the W. the name was eventually attached to the Vigil or night part of the Office, the older morning prayer becoming known as
Lauds. Its main components were Ps. 95 (the
Invitatory), a hymn, Psalms, readings (usually from the Bible, the Fathers, or Lives of saints), and the
Te Deum. In 1971 it was replaced by the
Office of Readings.
In the C of E the name is used for the service of ‘Morning Prayer’. The structure of the BCP Office is similar to that of
Evensong. Elements come from the medieval Office of Mattins, from Lauds, and from
Prime. Modern Anglican liturgies allow alternative
Canticles and other variations.
