Illuminati. A name applied to several bodies of religious enthusiasts, including (1) the
Alumbrados; (2) the
Rosicrucians; and (3) a masonic sect founded in Bavaria in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt. Repudiating the claims of all existing religious bodies, they professed themselves to be those in whom alone the ‘illuminating’ grace of Christ resided. They were banished from Bavaria in 1784 but survived elsewhere.
