Iceland, Christianity in. Christianity reached Iceland from
Norway c.980 and was accepted by the ruling council in 999/1000. The medieval Church was under the administrative jurisdiction of Bremen, then of
Lund, and finally of Trondheim (Nidaros). At the
Reformation Iceland followed
Denmark, to whose rule she had been subject since
c.1380, in adopting
Lutheranism. In modern times there has been a revival of Church life; there was a new translation of the Bible in 1981.
